Memorial Day

Are you ready to commemorate Memorial Day in the heart of New York City? At Reservation Resources, we’re here to ensure your stay in Brooklyn or Manhattan is as comfortable as possible during this significant holiday. Memorial Day is not just about marking the beginning of summer; it’s a time to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

When is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday of May, is a day of remembrance and reflection. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27th, providing a long weekend for many to pay their respects and enjoy time with family and friends.

 Memorial Day

How was Memorial Day Started?

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, originated in the aftermath of the Civil War. In May 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. The date chosen was May 30th, as it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. On this day, flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring the over 620,000 individuals who lost their lives during the war.

Over time, Memorial Day evolved to commemorate all American military personnel who have died in all wars, not just the Civil War. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a federal holiday and shifted to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend.

What is Memorial Day for?

Memorial Day serves as a time for Americans to remember and honor the brave men and women who have selflessly given their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It’s a day to reflect on their sacrifices, to express gratitude for their service, and to recognize the profound impact their actions have had on our nation’s history.

In addition to its solemn remembrance, Memorial Day has also become synonymous with the unofficial start of summer. Many communities across the country hold parades, ceremonies, and other events to honor fallen service members. Families and friends often gather for barbecues, picnics, and outdoor activities, taking advantage of the long weekend to spend quality time together.

Five Things to Do on Memorial Day Weekend
